The world of the NHK Educational TV show Art Tunes! comes to the Yokohama Triennale!
Masterpieces like Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji: The Great Wave Off the Coast of Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai and Portrait of Reiko by Kishida Ryusei have been turned into songs by Art Tunes! As a companion event to the Yokohama Triennale held beginning in March 2024, this exhibition offers interactive media art involving reproductions and videos derived from the works. The theme is “becoming art,” so come along and become characters and figures in the artworks and have fun with art!

Art Tunes! is a show on NHK Educational TV that introduces art from around the world in an easy-to-understand way through original songs and animations.

1. The Rain Loves People, But How Do You Draw It?

What kind of rain would you draw? Imagine that you’re the artist, and make it rain on the people crossing the famous Ohashi bridge over the Sumida river.

2. Reiko, the Performer of Faces

This young girl, Reiko, has a mysterious and unforgettable expression.
What could she be thinking about? Use your imagination to get inside her head.

3. Experience the Whoosh and Crash of Hokusai!

The wave looms even taller than Mount Fuji.
Imagine that you’re in the picture, rowing out to sea, and experience the power of the wave.

4. Looking for Tasty Food in and around Kyoto

Travel to Kyoto 400 years ago as depicted in the folding screens and look for delicious food!
Scenes in and around Kyoto (Funaki Version) by Iwasa Matabei is bustling with people! Art Tunes! focuses on the epicurean scenes in the artwork. Looking closely at the folding screens with a particular theme in mind will give you a clearer picture of the energetic daily lives of people 400 years ago. Become one of the residents of Kyoto depicted in the image and walk all over the city. This interactive exhibit uses a quiz format to search for Kyoto delicacies like multitiered food boxes, steamed buns, grilled fish, and clam soup displayed on the monitor next to the folding screens.
