Important cultural property Flowering Plants of Summer and Autumn By Sakai Hoitsu Edo period, 19th century
*A high-resolution reproduction will be on display at the venue.
The ancient inhabitants of Japan developed a reverence for the natural world around them in their everyday lives and expressed it through poetry, painting, and other forms of art. Those values and worldview are the same today as they were long ago.
This exhibition presents seven works of Japanese art (reproductions) depicting flowers of the four seasons alongside contemporary pop culture. The key that links those seven works with contemporary times is the idol group Nogizaka46.
With each member assigned a different flower, video installations of their performances are used to convey the essence of the forms through which the people of Japan represented flowers from season to season. The juxtaposition of the lyrics and aesthetics embodied by the members of Nogizaka46 with cultural properties reveals the contiguity of Japanese culture with our daily lives and nature.
The exhibition will serve as an excellent opportunity for people, even those who have had little previous exposure to antique art or have never visited a museum before, to experience the appeal of cultural properties.
*The exhibited works, exhibition period, etc. may be changed due to future circumstances.
