The virtual special exhibition “Anonymous—Masterpieces of Unknown Artists” in collaboration with Studio Chizu and director Mamoru Hosoda, the makers of the animated film The Girl Who Leapt through Time, will open online on Saturday, December 19, 2020*.

Exhibition Highlights

“Virtual Tohaku” is a virtual museum that reproduces part of the Tokyo National Museum (“Tohaku”) through computer graphics on the virtual social platform Cluster!
The special exhibition “Anonymous—Masterpieces of Unknown Artists,” which was created just for a scene in the animated film The Girl Who Leapt through Time under the supervision of a Museum curator and could not have taken place in reality, will finally be brought to life in this space. Users will be able to freely walk around the space and appreciate the artworks through the Cluster platform.
This special virtual exhibition brings together the enjoyment of the world of The Girl Who Leapt through Time, which has not lost its shine even fourteen years after its release, and Japanese art that has been admired through the ages.

About the Special Virtual Exhibition “Anonymous—Masterpieces of Unknown Artists”

The exhibition that appears in the 2006 animated film The Girl Who Leapt through Time was modeled on the Tokyo National Museum. This exhibition, the full details of which remained unclear in the film, will open in Cluster for a limited time only.
Like the exhibition in the film, this exhibition will bring together artworks that have been passed down as masterpieces even though their creators remain unknown, including White Plums, Camellias and Chrysanthemums (an imaginary artwork appearing only in the film), an artwork with an important meaning to the story of The Girl Who Leapt through Time, as well as the National Treasures The Peacock Wisdom King and The Monk Xuanzang (both in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum), under the supervision of Masato Matsushima, a curator from the National Center for the Promotion of Cultural Properties.
