Painted in 1069 by the artist Hata no Chitei, the National Treasure Illustrated Biography of Prince Shotoku is the oldest surviving illustrated account of the prince’s life. It depicts 58 episodes from Prince Shotoku’s life, including his memorization of stories told by 36 children and his authoring of Japan’s first constitution.
The Tokyo National Museum now houses this priceless work. However, much of its original vibrancy and detail have been lost over the years, with its fine depictions now difficult to fully appreciate through a glass case. In addition, the work is only exhibited for around one month per year for preservation reasons.
Many people experienced “Cultural Properties in 8K: The National Treasure Illustrated Biography of Prince Shotoku” released by the Tokyo National Museum using high-definition images in 2018 and 2019. To enable even more people to enjoy this priceless cultural asset, new content has now been created using cutting-edge 5G technology.

There are two viewing tools, the Magical Glasses and Magical Loupe.
With the Magical Glasses, if you view the full-sized reproduction panels in the venue while wearing AR glasses, animations and explanations will appear, allowing you to enjoy the work in a manner that is easy to understand visually.
With the Magical Loupe, if you hold a 5G smartphone in front of one of the reproduction panels, superhigh-definition images will be displayed. Select an episode to gain a deeper appreciation for the work through commentary and narrations.
We hope you will enjoy this encounter between a precious cultural asset and cutting-edge technology.
